MASTERS TF SUCCESSFUL IN PROVIDENCE
January 31
The USATF East Region and New England Masters Indoor Championship drew over 160 competitors to Providence on Sunday.
Competitors took advantage of the first non-high school meet ever held in the two year old Providence Career and Technical Academy facility to record good early season performances. Four pending US age group records were turned in by two competitors, both age 75. On the track, sprinter Barbara Jordan (Mass Velocity / Burlington VT) ran 10.64 for 60 meters and 38.45 for the 200, while thrower Mary Roman (Mass Velocity / Norwalk CT) tossed the 2 kilogram shot 8.32 meters and the 4 kilogram weight 11.15 meters as best ever that division.
Team winners (combined men/women) were Mass Velocity with Twilight Throwers second.
The 200 meter mondo oval and quality field event set-up exceeded all competitors' expectations, and the meet will tentatively return there in 2012. Thanks to Classical HS athletic director - and weight throw medalist - Bob Palazzo for the efforts to bring the meet to Rhode Island, and to his team that provided necessary volunteer support. Results are at the track and field page.
